Environmental Impact of Pharos and other Campus Initiatives, April 2017

The following is based on the number of cases of paper purchased so far this fiscal year compared to the last three years*.

So far this year the reduction in cases of paper purchased* is 920 cases, which equals 23 tons.

Twenty-three tons of reduction in paper consumption, including our current projected reduction in case purchases translates to an environmental impact of:

  • Water reduction: 467,187 gallons
  • Solid waste reduction: 52,394 pounds
  • Greenhouse gas emission reduction: 130,870 pounds
  • Energy reduction: saved approximately 256082 kWh of energy, enough to power the average household for 19 years, 2 months.
  • Trees saved: 552

*Certain departments may yet purchase paper before the end of the fiscal year

  1. A.      Campus community
    1. 1.       Students
    2. Individual student concerns will be addressed by a member of the task force. Students should contact Olivia Herron, Sustainability Coordinator, at 931-221-6362 or herronb@apsu.edu.
    3. When the Pharos system is reviewed in Spring 2017, students who signed the town hall sheet will be invited to participate in the process. Any other student who is interested should contact Olivia Herron.
    4. The task force will continually look for ways to add student value to the print management system.
      1. 2.       Faculty
      2. Support the faculty group formed (spring, 2016) to encourage the reduction of paper consumption on campus.
      3. Encourage faculty to reduce the amount of paper in their courses by considering their expectations of students to print out.
      4. Encourage faculty to learn technological solutions, such as D2L, that reduce paper consumption.
        1. 3.       Staff
        2. Support the staff group formed (spring, 2016) to encourage the reduction of paper consumption on campus.
        3. Encourage departments to consider technological solutions, such as Perceptive Content, in workplace practices.
          1. 4.       Messaging to the campus community
          2. Work with Marketing and Communications to regularly update students through TheGovSays and social media.
          3. Manage and update a FAQ sheet at the Helpdesk webpage

B.      Access

  1. 5.       Where Pharos is installed
  2. All labs and classroom/labs have Pharos.
  3. Classroom only computer rooms (to which students have no access outside class) do not have Pharos.
  4. If a department or faculty member wishes to request a lab be an exception to Pharos, then they contact the Provost who contacts the Pharos Task Force who calls a meeting with the Provost, the requesting party and the task force. The Provost makes the final determination as to whether a lab or classroom/lab has Pharos removed.
  5. Generic log-ins have been abolished at APSU.
    1. 6.       Who has access to Pharos printers
    2. All students who have been issued a student ID card for that semester.
    3. All faculty who wish to load Pharos “money” on to their ID card.
    4. Departments may request a dedicated Pharos card from the Provost who will contact the Pharos Task Force and call a meeting to look for alternative solutions to the support the department’s needs.
    5. The library will retain five blank cards dedicated to Pharos that the front desk will check out to visitors who will load the card with “money.” Any remainder on the card will be lost to the user when they return the card; it will be available to the next user.
    6. The library will retain several Pharos cards to be used at the discretion of the library staff.

 
C.      Finance

  1. 7.       Students
  2. The allotment for students enrolled each semester in classes is $30.
  3. All students, regardless of enrollment status, i.e. part time, full time, or location, etc. will receive the $30 printing allowance per semester enrolled.
  4. Once the allotment is used, the cost of printing for black and white will be $0.08 for simplex and $0.10 for duplex. This means students taking advantage of duplex printing will effectively double the number of sheets they can print from their quota.  For color printing the charge will be $0.25 per page.
  5. APSU will allocate $30 to each enrolled student’s account at the beginning of each semester. Printing allotments will roll over from Fall to Spring semester, to be swept from student accounts at the end of Spring semester. Printing allotment for Summer will be swept from the students account at the end of the semester, as outlined below.
  • Fall semester will include the fall semester on the Clarksville campus and the Fall I and Fall II terms at Fort Campbell.
  • Spring will include the Wintermester, Spring semester on the Clarksville campus, and Spring I and Spring II at Fort Campbell.
  • Summer will include Maymester, Summer III at Fort Campbell, and the Summer I and Summer II terms on the Clarksville campus.

 
D.      Annual review

  1. 8.       The Pharos Procedures and Guidelines will be reviewed each spring by the Pharos Task Force, as necessary, with interested students who respond to an e-mail invite. The Sustainability Coordinator will organize and moderate the meeting(s), and make modifications to Pharos documents as necessary.
