Request to Add a Network Data Drop

Overview (What is it?)

Are you remodeling your office? Are you moving furniture and need to connect your computer and telephone to the network at a new location? Are you adding staff to your office and need additional computers and phones connected? Are you creating a computer lab space or area where computers will need access to the network or internet? You may need to request a new network data port to be installed. Do you have a network data port in your office, lab, work space or residence hall that doesn't work? Network data ports are vital in connecting computers used for University business.

The maximum length of a network data cable from the wall to a phone or computer is 15 feet. If longer data cables are used, there may be issues with the signal sent and received over that long cable. If you are trying to connect a computer or phone to a network data port that is more than 15 feet away, you need to have a new port installed.

You will need one data port for each computer in the area. One phone and one computer can share one data port. However, two phones or two computers cannot share a single data port.

Eligibility (Who can request it?)

Any University employee or residence hall resident.

Cost

The installation of network ports is contracted out to a third party provider in most cases. The cost of the labor and parts for this service is passed along to the requestor. Activation of existing ports does not have an associated cost to the requestor.
